Big Bend National Park, Texas
Big Bend has many diverse environments. One part of the park has mountains of boulders the size of cars. The above formation is appropriately called “Balanced Rock.”
I waded into the chilly waters at the end of Santa Elena Canyon trail!
Horses and other livestock cross the Rio Grande from Mexico and enter the park.
Sotol Vista along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive at sunset. The reds, yellows, blues and purples of the park were incredible, especially in the early morning and late evening.
Big Bend is about the size of Road Island, one of the largest protected areas in our country.

My campsite was about 50 yards from the Texas/Mexico border on the Rio Grande River. I would go to this overlook at sunset see the watery boundary. Both nations protect this nature area on their respective sides of the border.
Some of the largest dinosaur fossils have been found in Big Bend, including the head of this Deinosuchus, which was a 40 foot alligator that swam in the sea over Texas hundreds of millions of years ago.
